|: SUSTAINING THE SWEET NOTES OF LIFE
The Need
Georgians with disabilities need our support. These families are running a marathon filled with lifelong challenges. They are so overburdened navigating the myriad of treatments, therapies, schooling options, insurance coverage challenges, and the reality that everyday life is much harder than expected. They have little energy to advocate for themselves. Furthermore, since these are lifelong challenges that go beyond the horizon of the parents' lifetime, there is no "graduating class" that moves in to help and support the newly diagnosed.
Our Approach
While there are countless challenges to tackle within this community, music therapy is a proven and effective intervention to accomplish individualized, non-musical goals. This is anything from basic hygiene, social skills, and emotional regulation, all the way up to basic job training skills. Music therapy is also clinically proven to improve gross motor abilities like balance, coordination & gait, fine motor abilities, speech articulation, as well as mood, memory recall and other cognitive abilities. Sadly, in Georgia, this therapy, although recognized as a related service under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), is not yet covered by Medicare or most insurances as other intervention therapies are. This is where we come in by sponsoring music therapy scholarships so more families have access to this type of care!
